Finding a date in the middle of a pandemic can be challenging. People are unable to go out, meet new people, and socialize. With the lockdown, the use of dating apps has increased a lot. Many apps also allow online or virtual dates with your matches. This is a safer option than meeting up with your date and risking your health.
According to a 2020 report by the Global Web Index, online dating consists of 61 percent male users. Because of this skewed ratio, women on dating apps get twice as many options. Every individual is different – with variable interests and tastes- and there is no sure-shot formula to impress your date. However, here are some of the things you can do to set yourself apart from the others your date might meet on the app.
Take it slow
Try to go with the flow of the conversation to ensure both you and your match are on the same page. While you may be ready to have an online date with your match, they may not feel the same way. Many prefer to have a conversation over text before they feel comfortable enough to talk over video.
Others may take quite some time to respond to your messages. Instead of bombarding them with double and triple texts, wait for them to respond whenever it is convenient for them. People might have other things going on with their lives, and online dating may not be as much of a priority for them.
Show Interest
You are there to learn more about each other. While it might be tempting to talk about yourself and your achievements, you should also focus on your date. Be attentive to what they are talking about by actively listening, nodding, and asking follow-up questions. Make them feel validated through smiles and genuine compliments.
You are not a Stand-up Comedian
While it is a good thing to have fun in a conversation, do not try to force it. Many people are naturally witty and can be effortlessly humorous, while others may not be so skilled in that department. You might be tempted to try your jokes, one-liners, and pick-up lines to make your date laugh. Yet, your date might not share your sense of humor or understand the context of the joke. Sometimes it is a better idea to start your conversation with simple questions instead of some cringe-inducing punchline.
Avoid awkward or rude topics
As you are trying to know the person, you might end up asking questions that might offend them. Do not make comments that might appear sexist or racist. Since it is your first date, it is better to avoid questions that are highly intimate or personal. Talking about a past relationship is also a big red flag for a first date, especially if you are portraying your ex negatively.
Some of the other touchy subjects to avoid would include politics, money, family background, and marriage (or the future of the relationship). Be respectful. If you feel like what you are talking about is making the other person uncomfortable, stop immediately and switch to a different subject.
Be honest and direct
At some point, you two might have to talk about your intentions and what you are expecting from your date. It is no secret that dating apps are also used for hook-ups and other such non-romantic relationships. You might be there looking for a casual fling, a partner to have sex with, a long-term relationship, or any other form of relationship.
When the topic arises, be honest about what you want. If the other person is on the same page, it’s your lucky day. If not, you would know that this isn’t the right person. You can then move on and keep looking.
Be yourself
It’s a cliche because it is true (now that’s another cliche). You can be your best friend during an online date by being your most authentic self. Do not pretend to be someone you are not just because it will make the other person like your more. Do not approach the person thinking that they are perfect. As you try to know them more, you will also know what you like about them and what you don’t. Give them the chance to do the same for you.
